“For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled,
and he who humbles himself will be exalted.”

  There is a story of a Kentucky farmer named Abner who
happened to see a newspaper ad promoting the Derby
and listing the registration dates and times for the horses.

  He looked out at his faithful mule Betsie and thought;
Why not?
Riding her into the stables at Churchill Downs the next day,
he and Betsie took their place in line with the thoroughbreds.

  When it was Abner’s turn at the registration booth, the
agent grinned and commented; ”Sir, do you really think that
your ole’ mule can run two miles with these prize horses and
win this race”?
  “Heck no”, the farmer answered, “I just thought their association
with one another would do them both a world of good.”

  Humility is so essential to our salvation that we must
sometimes run the risk of humiliation in order to learn the virtue
of humility.

 Today’s scripture burdens our hearts with the questions;
Am I too proud to invite the poor to my dinner?
Who would repay me?

  Why does Jesus emphasize this notion?
Because, Pride leads to every other vice.  It is the complete
anti-God state of mind.  C.S. Lewis,Mere Christianity

  We are reminded that God assigns the places at table for
the Heavenly banquet.
Some will be asked to come sit in the front and others will be
reseated in the rear.
